The most
terrifying place of all the country can be found in the lake of Xochimilco, in
Mexico City. The place is commonly called The Island of dolls (la isla de las
muñecas) There is a small island over the lake that keeps the essence of a
horror movie. The house in the island is decorated with incomplete dolls.
Some are
missing legs or arms, other are missing eyes or even the heads.
It took
many years for Julian Santa Ana Barrera to decorate this peculiar island.
Julian was a strange guy who died a few years ago although he will always be
remembered for his house, which turned into a touristic place.
Julian was known as a humble and outgoing man. When he grew old he started to preach the word of god in the
corners of Xochimilco. Since then the people of the town started to call him
crazy. One day a girl died drowned in the lake in front of his house. Julian
used to say that he started to hear voices in house so he started to collect
all the dolls he could to hang them all over his house. He said that the dolls
were used as a protection to “Scare the spooks”.

His nephew Anastasio says that surprisingly his uncle died in the exact
same place as the drowned girl.
The day Julian died in April of 2001, the old man approached the lake
for fishing, while he was telling his nephew that a mermaid wanted to take him,
but that he was going to sing for her to stop her. Anastasio, his nephew went
inside the house for a moment and when he returned with his uncle he wasn’t
there anymore, he had died because of a heart attack and fell into the lake.
That is the story of the most terrifying place in Mexico that is now called the
Island of the dolls. There are so many dolls that the authorities are looking
for a museum to keep them.
